COMIC: SHERLOCK HOLMES YEAR ONE

In January, the origin of one of the world's most iconic heroes - Sherlock Holmes - is revealed by writer Scott Beatty with art by one of Dynamite's new "finds" Daniel Lindro.  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's dauntless detective returns in an all-new series of adventures exploring the sleuth's untold origins! Join Dr. John Watson as he meets young Sherlock Holmes in a fateful encounter that will forever shape both men's destinies! Mysteries and murders most foul abound as we discover clues that reveal just how Holmes became the world's most famous detective!  Discover more about the beginnings of the iconic Sherlock Holmes this January!

"Here's the deal: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are the ORIGINAL partners-in-crimefighting," says writer Scott Beatty. "Sherlock Holmes: Year One is no mere ‘Year One' story. For both Watson and readers, Sherlock Holmes IS the mystery. Who is he? Where does he come from? What drives him? Watson is compelled to find out. And it'll take more than deductive reasoning to solve the most important case of the detectives' careers, a dozen murders laid squarely at their feet!"
"We were very proud how our first Sherlock Holmes mini-series performed, both critically and commercially, and when collected, we were fortunate in that the Hardcover and TPB both exceeded our expectations in sales." says Dynamite Entertainment President Nick Barrucci.  "Our fans wanted more Sherlock Holmes comic books, but we did not wish to rush a series out, and we waited to strive for the best possible creative team for the origin of Sherlock Holmes.  The story that Leah (Moore) and John (Reppion) told in the first issue received praise from fans to contemporary comic book writers from Ed Brubaker to Joe Michael Straczynski, Damon Lindenolf and other luminaries.  We wanted to wait till we had just the right story, and have with  Scott Beatty - who did a fantastic job on Ruse -  as writer and new found artist Daniel Lindro as artist.  To top it off, we have covers by Aaron Campbell who rendered the art on our premiere Sherlock Holmes series as well as drawing Green Hornet: Year One with Matt Wagner, and Francesco Francavilla who is currently drawing Marvel's Man Without Fear.  Sherlock Holmes: Year One will not disappoint!"
"It's my privilege to be associated with such a venerable and influential character," says cover artist Aaron Campbell.   "Dynamite's Sherlock Holmes stories, which I was fortunate to draw the interiors of the last series, can be just as exciting and relevant today as they were 100 years ago!"

"I have been a Sherlock Holmes fan since I was a kid, watching Basil Rathbone's movies and reading Doyle's novels," adds cover artist Francesco Francavilla. "So it's no surprise I am very happy to be part of Dynamite's new Sherlock series as a cover artist."

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective created by Scottish author, Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. As a brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take almost any disguise, and his forensic science skills to solve difficult cases.

SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE BAKER STREET IRREGULARS is a series of four graphic novel stories to be released by Franklin Watts / EDGE books, a division of Hachette Children’s Books, in March of 2011.

Written by Tony Lee, with art by Dan Boultwood, these four books are said to chronicle the adventures of the Baker Street Irregulars, Holmes’ street urchin aides, during the period of the Great Hiatus when Holmes was believed dead after his fateful encounter with Professor James Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls. Stories titles are: 'The Adventure Of The Missing Detective’, ‘The Adventure Of The Phantom Of Drury Lane’, ‘The Adventure Of  The Charge Of  The Old Brigade’ and ‘The Adventure Of The Family Reunion.’ In an effort to place the stories in Canonical context, Sherlockian expert Leslie S. COMIC: WILDSTORM'S VICTORIAN UNDEAD #3 RELEASED JANUARY 27, 2010

The third issue of Wildstorm's VICTORIAN UNDEAD comic book mini-series pitting Sherlock Holmes against a zombie menace in Victorian London hit comic shops earlier this week. In this latest issue Mycroft Holmes, after rescuing his brother and Dr. Watson from an underground zombie attack in issue 2, explains some of the suppressed background to the newly awakened zombie menace and before the issue is through we find Holme, Watson and Mrs. Hudson facing a new outbreak on the very doorstep of 221B Baker Street!

Simply put, this series is turning out to be a fascinating and well-conceived read and is fast becoming my all-time favourite original incarnation of Sherlock Holmes in the comic book medium. Fun story by Ian Edginton and great artwork by Davide Fabbri! Highly Recommended!

COMIC: AUSTRALIAN SERIES - DARK DETECTIVE: SHERLOCK HOLMES

Premiering in July 2009, this new on-going series has been chilling readers to the bone for four issues now. Beginning with the free preview The Ghost of Mary Shelley, the series most recently featured Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart companion John Watson tackling the depravities of the Lodge of Bellorophon through the Chimera story arc.

Issue 4 is due in January 2010 and will bring a slight detour for the avid reader, focusing for a while on the mysterious office occupied by Mycroft Holmes. Mycroft, the keeper of so many secrets, has some terrible things to tell you – so listen closely.

While Dark Detective has largely been available only through Australian newsagents, that is about to change in January 2010 when interested readers will be able to order the printed comics directly from Australian publisher Black House Comics. In the meantime, you can download the preview issue The Ghost of Mary Shelley as a PDF file by clicking here.

The creative team behind Dark Detective: Sherlock Holmes features:

Christopher Sequeira has written for Marvel, DC, BOOM! Studios as well as being responsible for numerous independent titles. His Holmes work has been featured in Gaslight Grimoire: Fantastic Tales of Sherlock Holmes ("His Last Arrow") and he is a member of the Sydney Passengers. Check out his blog at www.comicbookwriter.blogspot.com.

Phil Cornell is a commercial artist who, while never having drawn for comics before, has become well known for his faithful renditions of Arthur Conan Doyle’s world. His fine story illustrations and frontispiece graced the pages Gaslight Grimoire: Fantastic Tales of Sherlock Holmes and he also provided cover art and interior art for Curious Incidents Volumes 1&2.

Dave Elsey is an Oscar nominated special effects artist who has worked on everything from Hellraiser to The Wolfman. His amazing covers bring forth a different side of Holmes and show both the man and monster within. Dave is also co-creator of the title and works the digital magic evident on each and every page. Dave has also provided the cover art for the forthcoming book Gaslight Arcanum: Uncanny Tales of Sherlock Holmes.

A talented team loaded with skill and imagination! These folks know their Sherlock Holmes and bring a wonderfully dark 'classic horror movie' sensibility to this project. If you love Sherlock Holmes, classic Universal monster movies and the output of Hammer Films Studios...this is definitely for you! Visit Black House Comics for more details!

COMIC: WILDSTORM'S VICTORIAN UNDEAD #1 UNLEASHED THIS WEEK

The first issue of Wildstorm Comics new Sherlock Holmes series - Victorian Undead - was unleashed to comic shops this past week, and happily, it is a fine and extremely fun read.

Written by Ian Edginton, with art by Davide Fabbri and a cover by Tony Moore, the book kicks off with a strange and ominous meteor shower in 1854 then jumps ahead to 1898 where workers in the Underground make a deadly and gruesome discovery. Soon after, when faced with a snarling and rabid corpse that won't stay still, Lestrade summons Sherlock Holmes for assistance, only to be warned off by ominous men in black - agents of Her Majesty's Secret Service. So begins the first issue in this exciting new six issue series pitting Holmes against a Zombie plague!

Ian Edginton (also doing a great job of adapting Conan Doyle's Holmes novels, with art by I.N.J Culbard, for Sterling's Illustrated Classics graphic novel series) does a marvelous job of presenting us with a highly intriguing, and so far mysterious, start to this challenging concept, with a hint that there will be far more to this series than simply pitting Holmes against a mindless zombie horde. Dialogue and story are both very convincing and his presentation of Holmes as an energetic,  curious and driven individual works extremely well. The proceedings are complemented by the beautifully rendered artwork of Davide Fabbri, whose character design for Holmes is, if perhaps a bit too handsome and super-heroic in proportions, a perfectly acceptable and appealing creation. Watson fares a little less well and is presented as a slightly stocky, gray-haired gent, sporting spectacles. The zombies are suitably ghastly and actually fairly disgusting to look upon, which is as it should be! Perhaps my only complaint about the look of the book is the somewhat over-lit and vivid colouring applied to the artwork, but it's a minor quibble. On the whole, this is a terrific read in every way and provides a great deal of fun for the imaginative reader, if not for the Sherlockian purist. Get out to your local comic shop and pick this one up! Highly Recommended.

COMIC: SHERLOCK HOLMES - THE PAINFUL PREDICAMENT OF ALICE FAULKNER GRAPHIC NOVEL

While therre are numerous comic book adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories and many more derivative works, it is fairly unusual to find a graphic novel based on William Gillette's play SHERLOCK HOLMES. However, that is precisely what  Bret M. Herholz has done with SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE PAINFUL PREDICAMENT OF ALICE FAULKNER. Utilizing a style reminiscent of the late great Edward Gorey, Herholz has adapted Gillette's play into an interesting and appealing graphic novel format. Due for release in December 2009 from Alterna Comics it should, in due course, also be available through most of the usual online bookstore sources as well as your local comic book retailer.

ISBN: 9781934985175
128 pgs, BW, $11.99
